The Creuse department in the Limousin

Discover the Creuse department in the heart of France

Did you know that the Creuse is one of the most thinly populated of the 89 French departments? According to the statistics there are only 22 inhabitants to the square kilometre compared with more then 250 per square km in the U.K!

To the French the Creuse is affectionately known as La France Profonde; in other words the original unspoilt part of France. Since January 2016 la Creuse is part of the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (Limousin, Aquitaine and Poitou-Charentes).

The Creuse - La France Profonde

The Creuse department

The department is named after the Creuse River, which crosses the department from southeast to northwest. The name Creuse is perhaps derived from the Celtic word 'Croso' but more probably from the Latin word 'creux. The 23 th department bears that name since 1790 and since January 1, 2016 is part of the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (Limousin, Aquitaine and Poitou-Charentes).

Since 2006 Valliere has been within the National Park of Millevaches. Creuse borders the mountainous area of the Massif Central which rises at its highest point to 930 metres. One of the greatest natural attractions in the locality is the splendid Lake Vassiviere.

There is no mass tourism in la Creuse but an unspoilt countryside perfectly adapted to the needs of anyone seeking a peaceful friendly environment, and all the surroundings contribute to that feeling. Its landscape of rolling hills, pierced by streams and rivers with paths and tracks bordered by oaks, chestnuts and wild fruit bushes is uniquely attractive to walkers and cyclists alike. Creuse is not for nothing called the land of a thousand and one lakes.

Hiking, cycling or simply enjoying

The meadow lands are studded with the brown and white colours of the famous Limousine and Charolais cattle. This is the place for you if you want to enjoy peace and space combined with outstanding natural beauty.
The region is ideal for a (active) walking or cycling holiday. Furthermore you can enjoy making delightful trips on your motorbike.

But of course you also can visit the quaint villages and towns in the vicinity of Vallière, where it (sometimes) seems as if you are going back in time.
And there you will find the rich architectural and artistic heritage gems as Romanesque buildings, castles and the famous Aubusson tapestry. All this appeals to both lovers of nature and authenticity!

Like to visit a big(ger) city? An hour's drive from Vallière and just outside the Creuse you will find Clermont-Ferrand (with, among others l'aventure Michelin), Limoges (porcelain, among others) and Muntlucon (with a historic center). Plenty of choice!
